THE METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL OF SAINT JOHN THE EVANGELIST GRANTED A SPECIAL BOND OF SPIRITUAL AFFINITY WITH THE PAPAL BASILICA OF SAINT PAUL OUTSIDE THE WALLS

15 February 2012- Dagupan City. His Eminence, Francesco Cardinal Monterisi, Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, has bestowed upon the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint stjohncathedralJohn the Evangelist in the City of Dagupan a special bond of spiritual affinity with the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls by virtue of decree from the Rome dated February 15, 2012, the eve of the forty ninth anniversary of the elevation of Lingayen Dagupan to the rank of a Metropolitan See. In the papal basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls may be found the stone coffin containing the bones of the Saint Paul the Apostle.

Furthermore, the Apostolic Penitentiary through the Major Penitentiary His Excellency Most Reverend Emmanuel Monteiro de Castro, has also granted all pilgrims visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist in Dagupan City papal blessings and plenary indulgence under the usual conditions laid down by Church laws.

This means that all the Catholic faithful who visit and pray in the Cathedral of Saint John gain the spiritual benefits of the Church as if they actually visited in the papal basilica in Rome.

The Cathedral of Saint John in Dagupan City is the second church in the Archdiocese of Lingayen Dagupan to be granted the title “special bond of spiritual affinity” with one of the four papal basilicas worldwide. The first church to be granted this special title and privilege is the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Manaoag bestowed by the papal basilica of Saint Mary Major.Papal-Basilica-of-St-Paul-Outside-the-Walls

For the information of our Catholic faithful, there are only four papal basilicas in the whole world—Saint Peter, Saint Paul Outside the Walls, Saint John Lateran and Saint Mary Major. All other basilicas elsewhere are called minor basilicas.

In granting this favor, the church that is granted a bond of spiritual affinity becomes like an affiliate of the papal basilica. This gesture makes the spiritual benefits of the Catholic Church more available to the Catholic faithful specially the poor who cannot afford to make a pilgrimage to Rome. In going to Mass and receiving Holy Communion and praying for the Pope while visiting the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, the Catholic faithful receive their papal blessings and plenary indulgence as if they went to the papal basilica of Saint Paul.

What is a plenary indulgence? An indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment that our sins deserve. Having committed sin or failed to do the good we must always do, we approach the sacrament of penance. In this sacrament, guilt is removed but the effects of sin remain in us. In granting indulgences, the Church acts as a dispenser of the spiritual treasury entrusted to her by the Lord Jesus Christ. The Church is the caretaker of rich, vast, incalculable and ever increasing spiritual gifts. When the Church grants a plenary indulgence, it commits to put its vast spiritual treasury available for the sinner who wants to step towards holiness.

Indulgences may also be applied for the faithful departed as an act of charity for the dead. The Church asserts no power to declare with authority the extent of cleansing that the faithful need to endure in purgatory.

The Archdiocese of Lingayen Dagupan invites the Catholic faithful from all over the country to make a pilgrimage to Manaoag and Dagupan and avail of the papal blessings and plenary indulgences that the Holy See promises to those who come to these pilgrim sites.
